On October 25, 2014, more than 65,000 people attended the Gay Pride Parade in Taipei – making it the largest gay parade in Asia. With the theme of “Embrace sex/sexuality and recognize differences”, the parade started off from Ketagalan Boulevard at 2pm and lasted 2 hours through the streets of Taipei.
Many people in Taiwan hope to see Taiwan’s progressiveness to become the first country to allow same-sex marriage and the ability for same-sex couples to start a family together. A draft bill has cleared a first reading in the Legislative Yuan last year. However, the bill’s current progress is stalled due to protests from multiple organizations in Taiwan stating that marriage is a right pertaining to one man and one woman.
